Social Classes, Prostitution and Jack the Ripper in the...

After the Age of Enlightenment in the mid 18th century in England, the tension between the social classes intensified even more. A huge gap generated between the aristocrats and the working class, but dozens of new layers of society appeared. While the rich lived to the fullest, the lower class starved and needed to find alternative ways of money making. Prostitution became more and more widespread, which lead to an inequality and social stratification between poor and rich and due to the economical crisis the number of prostitutes grew from year to year. The upper class enjoyed leisure, operas, balls and everything what had to do something with luxury and what none of the lower classes could afford. Aristocracy was well known by their morals and etiquette in the Victorian ages. The Victorian Aristocratic views on morals were extinguished which was even prudish. Prudery went as far as sexuality was a taboo, human body must have been covered and talking about body was inappropriate. In the Victorian Era society started to have different values in morality. Upper class people had low tolerance for sexuality and crimes, and isolated from any of the lower class members. Thus sexuality, especially prostitution was not acceptable and eminently discriminates in the Victorian high society. In the Victorian Era it was so inappropriate to talk about sexuality, it is hard to find anything in literature that could connect the irreproachable and honorable aristocracy to prostitution in any ways. Although, the best patrons of these working women were always the nobility. It is the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, which itself was reauthorized in 1994. The NCLB expanded the role of the federal government in education and has become the pivotal point of public education, spurring debates amongst for anyone interested. The act is aimed at improving education of disadvantaged students by holding states, schools, and educators accountable for student progress. Education Week September 21, 2004). There are four pillars to the NCLB, accountability being foremost. Annual academic testing is a key element in accountability and must be completed by each state every year. These tests compare the students to each other in their given state of residence. By the school year 2013/2014 the states must bring all students up to the â€Å"proficient† level. Individual schools must also make â€Å"adequate yearly progress† (A YP) for students and sub-groups of students. If schools receiving Title I funds fail to make AYP two years in a role, they must offer another public school choice to students that choose to leave that school. (Education Week September 21, 2004) Teachers, under the NCLB, must be â€Å"highly qualified. † This means that teachers must demonstrate competency in the content area they teach, by being certified in their given area. The paraprofessionals that are hired with Title I funds must hold an associate’s degree or higher or demonstrate competency. The act in general, is designed around all stakeholders in a child’s education is to be held accountable, including the parents. (Education Week September 21, 2004) Parents are informed regularly on student progress and in their areas of strengths and weaknesses, as well as the schools progress in education the students. Parents are encouraged to partner with the school in educating the students. In 2002 when the NCLB was enacted, it was legislated for 5 years. It was expected to be renewed, with no second thought, in 2007. It turns out that when the act was up for renewal, according to White (2009), the Senate Democrats were divided on the issue and most of the Republicans despised it. The Act was put aside to contemplate reform ideas. It was put on the back burner until January of 2009. President Obama, during his campaign, stated he is in favor of public education and against publicly funded vouchers to pay for private school education. He vowed to fix the many problems of the NCLB, some of which are pay raises for teachers and a redesign of the high-stake test to support learning without punishing teachers. White, 2007) Supporters of the NCLB believe with the federal government that accountability, with an emphasis on testing, will improve the quality of public education. They also believe setting standards of achievement and providing resources, especially in disadvantaged schools, will level the playing field for all. The opposition, major teacher unions and some parents, claim that the act has no t improved education and which is evidenced by the high-stake testing results. They claim the tests themselves are flawed and biased. There is some that feel that the federal government has no place legislating for education, it should be left up to the individual states. My take on this, as an educator for the past ten years is that I agree that instruction should be aligned to standards. I think the teachers should be highly knowledgeable in the content area they are teaching. The only problem I have with standards is that they should be â€Å"national standards. † I see too many students transferring from various states that are either behind or ahead of where we are when they enter the system. I also believe there is too much pressure put on the teachers to perform on the standardized tests. I have taught in a school system that was deemed â€Å"needs improvement. † I can honestly say the teachers were doing everything they could to get the school to make AYP; we had no support from home. We are teaching the standards set forth by the state, we felt the pressure of student performance. My argument is that the only part of the accountability piece of NCLB that is not being addressed is the role of the parent. The school systems and teachers are providing progress to the parents and living up to their end of the NCLB. Are the parents doing their part? We are lucky if we see 100 parents on parent night, report card night, etc. We need more parent support; teachers cannot do it all. Parents need to step up to the plate and take an active role in their child’s education. The home is the first place where learning starts and the parent is the first teacher a child has in life. Parental involvement in a child’s life has a major effect on a child having a successful education. When parents provide structure, support, and guidance in the home the child has a higher success rate than those that don’t have these three critical factors. When a child is nurtured at home, has a parent that shows interest and becomes involved in the child’s, education it gives the teacher a better chance at teaching a child. The parent’s positive attitude about school and education is imperative to a child’s achievement and success. When a parent demonstrates a positive attitude about school and learning then, more than likely, the child will have a positive outlook about his or her education. Parents cannot put all the responsibility on the education system; they must take an active role in their child’s education because no matter what plan or act that is put in place, teaching and learning start at home first, and we need more parent support. Shame in the Scarlet Letter free essay sample

Shame affects everyone in their lives sooner or later. People don’t all feel it in the same way. In the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne the main character Hester Prynne knows how it feels to be ashamed or embarrassed. She’s shamed because while she was married she cheated on her husband. She ended up having a baby with another man. To punish her she was commanded to wear a letter â€Å"A† for adultery, by the townspeople, to always be reminded of what she did. During the book Hester tries her hardest to not show her embarrassment but it still ends up coming out in certain parts. Another person that tries to be strong during what could be very shameful experience is a teenager that’s pregnant. Hester’s scarlet letter and a teenage pregnancy can be very similar in regards to shamefulness and the problems that come with it. Hester was an adult and still had a horrible punishment, now if she was a teenager the punishment probably would have been times worse. Like I said Hester tried to be strong in the whole situation. While she was on the scaffold she had a â€Å"burning blush and yet a haughty smile† (50). This showed that even though she was trying to make it seem like it didn’t bother her; it still did with her burning blush. What the burning blush meant was that her face was red and she was embarrassed with herself. On the other side the girls that are pregnant as teenagers have to face a lot of shame. They have many of decisions to make like if they should stay in school, what they’re going to do after high school, and the biggest question are they going to keep the baby. I know girls that stay in school during it have a lot of courage. I say this because as they walk through the halls everyone stares at them and has something to say, most of the time it’s not good things. People need to realize that the girl most like wasn’t planning to have a baby; it was an accident, like with Hester in The Scarlet Letter. Like how Pearl was unplanned. When people judge harshly on things that aren’t their business, bad things can happen. For example when Hester was on the scaffold in the middle of the town, and all the people where yelling nasty things at her. That must have made her feel horrible. The same thing applies with teenage girls. It makes them feel like they don’t have many friends and they become ostracized. When people constantly talk bad about the girl it’ll get to her. Like when Hester and Chillingworth are talking in the beginning of the book he says â€Å"I will not encounter the dishonor that besmirches the husband of a faithless woman† (73). I used this quote because she already knows what she did was wrong but, he continued to rub it in by saying she’s not faithful and what she did dishonored him. Because of the peoples ignorance in the Puritan society Hester lived a life of shame and solitude. This is why people shouldn’t make assumptions and be so quick to judge on issues that have nothing to do with them. Shame affected both of these people early in their lives. They have to take responsibility for what happened because of their actions. During that process they might have some embarrassing times but, they just need to overcome it. Everyone makes mistakes early in life; it’s just things to learn from. I give both Hester and any girl that’s going through an unplanned teenage pregnancy credit because it takes a lot of courage to go through either of those situations. Both teenage pregnancy and Hester’s Scarlet Letter can bring shame and embarrassment, and also some difficult problems to deal with.

Sandy Maxwell is a lawyer in training in Edinburgh, who at the start of the book is wanting to leave his path to being a lawyer in exchange for something more exciting. One day, after a fight with the lawyer he is apprenticed to, an important looking man walks into the office. Before long Sandy is asked by the man (Deryck Gilmour a special investigations officer) to try and find out as much as he can about George Robertson, a known smuggler who has escaped from prison. This simple task however, goes drastically wrong and suddenly Sandy is swept into a dangerous, full scale investigation of his case. One of the most exciting moments in the book was one the first mission that Sandy undertook. He was sent merely to inquire for any mention of George Robertson at Prestonpans. However, his curiosity gets the better of him when he meets an honest horse thief who is slightly linked with the case of George Robertson. He goes beyond the requirements of his duties and follows the man, named Rattray, to a deserted valley. However, he ends up caught, and kept in captivity in a small hut near the middle of the valley. It is here where he plans his escape. Through peephole which he cleverly makes, he finds out information on many things involving George Robinson. After a few days at the camp, a man referred to the as The Colonel shows up and orders for Sandy to be executed. At this point, Sandy realises that he must make an attempt to escape from the camp very soon. He ingeniously manages to open the door of his hut using a fishing rod. Jerusalem Art Essay Art involving Jerusalem is very controversial. One has to place into context the fact that Jerusalem is a significant city for three major religions—Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. Having one city be so significant leads to both the creation of conflict and beauty. There is conflict in the sense of war and destruction, and beauty in the sense of art on the subject. The three pieces of art this writer selected were all twentieth century pieces, but all show significant scenes, buildings or represent significant Psalms in the life of Jerusalem. Because of Jerusalem’s historical significance, this writer has chosen a piece of Islamic art that depicts the old city of Jerusalem, a piece of Jewish art that represents the Psalms, and a piece of Christian art that depicts the triumphal entry and some of the significant events of Holy Week, which is the final week of Christ’s life. The first piece of art is an Arab work that shows the old city of Jerusalem. In the painting, one sees a blue-gray sky that overlooks a sandstone colored city. There is a partial wall surrounding the city, and there appears to be two large prayer towers in the background. There are also some people, men, in the picture, looking towards the city and in a couple of cases walking towards that spiritual city. The city appears to be old, but not ancient, which means this is probably dated somewhere around the Crusades. Though this is a contemporary piece, the artist has chosen to depict Jerusalem at its height in Muslim hands. This painting probably represents Jerusalem during the Crusades. This piece would be very inspiring to Muslims, as it shows the city as theirs. It also gives them an image to look to when contemplating their own religious heritage. This brings us to the point of religious iconography and the Islamic faith. Religious iconography does not play as significant a role in Muslim religious life than in other religions. This is due in part to their trepidation about displaying the human form in a religious setting. This writer feels that this piece could be taken a number of different ways depending on the perspective, whether Muslim, Christian, or Jew. For Muslims if would take them back to a time of Muslim supremacy, when they â€Å"owned† one of the most important cities in their religion. Jerusalem is a significant city for the Muslims. According to various scholars, Jerusalem is significant because it is believed it is the city from which Muhammad rose to heaven. It is also significant because some of Islam’s most significant prophets (Abraham and Jesus) preached and taught. It is also a place to which Muhammad made an historic night pilgrimage. For Christians and Jews, it would be a solemn reminder that there was a time when Christians and Jews lost their most holy city to a people they deemed â€Å"infidels†. It would bring about a profound sense of sadness and loss and might inspire a fighting spirit in Jews and Christians to reclaim their city. Over the years, the passions the Muslims have over Jerusalem have become inflamed to the point of outright violence. The attitudes have only gotten more intense and more inflexible towards the Holy City. This writer feels that the times have only served to strengthen the resolve of Muslims to reclaim the city that they perceive as theirs. Emotionally, the tensions in the region have made Muslims even more determined to control the city completely. As significant as Jerusalem is to Muslims, it also has a supreme significance to Jews. Jews actually fee as if the city belongs to them and was bequeathed to them by God thousands of years ago. It is so significant that dozens of Psalms were written about the city. One of the Psalms is 125, which says in part, â€Å"[a]s the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people from this time forth and forever (verse 2). † In this painting by Irv Davis, one sees an encapsulated city of Jerusalem surrounded by grey mountains. The city is cream, almost white, and it is implied that the city is made of marble. The sky is blue and the sun is shining, adding to the shine on the city. One can imply that the encapsulation is the spirit of God surrounding the city and protecting it from outsiders and enemies. The contrasts are very sharp, the darkness of the mountains are contrasted with the whiteness and purity of the city. This obviously represents a very young Jerusalem. This also represents a time when the Jews were extremely fervent about their faith and wished to follow the Lord and seek his will. This picture represents a Jerusalem on the rise. It is also a bit on the allegorical side, with the young city representing a young faith. The newness of the city represents the fervency of the believers. They wish to follow the Lord and, as with anything new, the new city represents a new faith. This piece of art could be taken by the three groups in different ways. For Jews, it represents a time in their history when they had a true passion for God and would write songs of praise to the Lord using their most holy city as an inspiration. For Muslims, it would be a dour reminder that a region and city of the world they felt they originally owned had been forcibly removed from their possession and would remain in control of another group for several thousand years. They would also bemoan the fact that a new faith system would be replacing the polytheism that had dominated the region in the years prior to the Jewish takeover. Jews view the city of Jerusalem with as many passions and emotions as the Muslims. They see it as one of the most significant cities of their faith, and as such, wish to reclaim it as a purely Judeo-Christian city. The emotions of the Jews towards the city have always been strong, but over time, have waxed and waned, leading to the times that we have now where the Jews are fighting as passionately for the city as their Muslim counterparts. Both groups have legitimate religious and traditional claims to the city, yet either refuses to give in and relent towards their passions for the city. They each want the city, and are willing to do just about anything to get and maintain control over it. Christians have a whole other unique perspective on the city of Jerusalem. Before we can discuss the artistic expression of the selected artwork, it bears discussing the cultural ties that bind Christians to the city of Jerusalem. Christians view the city as very important because not only did Jesus make his triumphal entry into the city during Holy Week, but also taught in the region. Additionally, the apostles taught in the region and it was from the city of Jerusalem that Christianity was established in the form of Christ’s death and resurrection. The piece of art that was selected was some hand painted tiles from Jerusalem that show scenes from the triumphal entry and major scenes from Holy Week. The tiles are well-painted and detailed. Though they are also twentieth century, the story they tell condenses the entire story of Christianity in four small tiles. They are done in yellows, blues, white, black, and red. These tiles show an older, wiser Jerusalem. There is an overall sadness to the scenes, when one places the tiles in the context of the Bible, one can find that there is indeed a sadness, but at the same time a joy in the scene being depicted. It is ironic that death represents life and birth, but that is indeed what this scene and this depiction of Jerusalem shows. For Christians, Jerusalem represents the birth of their religion and the new life that is promised from the rising from the dead of Christ. Though there may be other cities that are significant in Christendom, for Christians, the events that transpired the week of Holy Week in Jerusalem are what assured the promises made in all the other cities. This piece of art could be taken by the three religions in different ways. For Christians, obviously, there is an association with the outright birth of the religion. The death that occurred outside Jerusalem represented the birth of a whole new belief system. For Jews, while the beliefs of Christian might be unusual, would see Christians as having as legitimate a claim to the city as they do, since they feel that the two groups worship the same God. For Muslims, the scenes simply show significant scenes in the life of a major prophet of their faith. They may view the Christian’s claims towards the city as interesting, but not as significant nor as important as their own claim towards the city. Christian attitudes towards the city have always been passionate, and they actually fought seven crusades that were specifically designed to take back the city from the Muslims. While they were not successful for long in keeping the Muslims out, they were able to develop a life of â€Å"peaceful coexistence† with the Muslims. Christians traditionally have supported the Jewish claim towards the city, as evidenced in the fact that we actively support the mission of Israel today. Christian passions have always been high for the city, but they have cooled over time, and we no longer actively seek to crusade against those we perceive as infidels. Christians now instead seek peaceful coexistence with other groups, but especially the Muslims. Christians are a pragmatic people that see the realities of the situation and only seek to have the best possible outcomes for all the parties. As one can see from the above statements, Jerusalem holds a special place in the hearts of all three religions. While it has inflamed passions, it has also inspired Psalmists and believers for centuries. We should seek understanding of the situations that create the passions and instead of seeming to remain in a state of constant conflict. We should view Jerusalem as a source of inspiration and not as a source of contention. The world’s three largest religions each have legitimate claims to the city and each needs to give up something in order to get access to the one city that they all deem to be the most important in their religion. Epistemological Turn in European Scientific Rationality ABSTRACT: If the 17th century could be considered the century of the reformation of science, the present century is one of counterreformation in every sense of the word. The ideology of this century can be seen in the titanic efforts to complete the development of science which foundation was laid in the 17th and 18th centuries, in the outright failures, and in attempts at reconstructing the foundation (e.g., Hilbert's formalization program, GÃ ¶del's incompleteness theorem, Charlier's theory of a hierarchic universe, Fridman's evolutionary cosmology, Newton's mechanics, relativistic and/or quantum mechanics in physics, the logical turn of the Vienna circle and epistemological anarchism in methodology). Our task is to reveal the essence of the turning points in 20th century science and to determine at least the general outlines, if not the cause, of the new type of rationality that is replacing the old one. I will focus on the history of cosmology, or rather on its three paradigms t hat have succeeded each other in this century: Newtonian, Fridmanian and the inflationary paradigms. By outlining the problem, I will pose a possible solution from clarifying changes in the value orientations, ideals and norms of scientific research to their possible generalization. Ever since the turn of the century, the same ideology has been in existence: titanic efforts to complete the development of the science whose foundation was laid in the 17th and 18th centuries and outright failures followed by the reconstruction of the foundation. There are many exemples, some of them very striking: Hilbert's formalisation program and Godel's incompleteness theorem in mathematics, Charlier's theory of a hierarchic universe and Fridman's theory of the evolutionary universe in cosmology, Newton's mechanics and relativistic and quantum mechanics in physics, and finally, the logical program of the Vienna circle and epistemological anarchism in methodology. Our task is to reveal the essence of the turning points in 20th centuries science history and to try to determine at least the general outlines, if not the cause, of the new type of rationality that is succeeding (or has already succeeded) the old one. Needless to say, we are obviously unable to embrace all branches of knowledge ; therefore, we will confine ourselves to the history of cosmology, or rather to its three paradigms that successively prevailed in this century : Newtonian, Fridman's and inflationary.

That is where computer forensics comes in, to treat/fix the hole and bring the culprit to justice. Therefore, where software security bring forth prevention, computer forensics, incidence response, calls for treatment. What exactly is computer forensics? It is a toolbox of science, which contains tools and methodologies to recover both passwor ds and deleted data, to analyze network traffic and logon/logoff times, to snoop and sniff out, as undercover agents do, rotten apples in the barrel. Due to the nature of each incident, the nature of the case may be legal, political, business, or technical oriented. Marketisation of Education Essay

Marketisation is the policy of introducing market forces of supply and demand into education. When the Conservatives came in to power the felt Labour failed to create meritocracy and restructured the system. The 1988 Education Reform Act began the creation of an education market by encouraging competiotion between schools and choice of parents. Before the Education Reform Act, the system was based on The Tripartite System where different types of students would attend one of three different types of schools: Grammar, Technical or Secondary Modern based on the result of their 11+ result. Eventually, it was clear to see that the triparite system didnt focus on equality, as the poorer working-class students would automatically fail the 11+ (restricting them from going to a Grammar school which was intended for the bright and academic) and therefore their chances of success in the future was minimal. Hence, the Education Reform Act was introduced in 1988 under the Tory government introducing a range of measurement; which Ball termed it as the Marketisation of education. This involved a number of changes, such as the introduction of league tables, forcing schools to publish their exam results. The introduction of SAT’s into year 2, year 6 and year 9 at school so formal progress at all schools could be made and monitored and the introduction of the National Curriculum so schools had to teach the same things at the same time. OFSTED was also created so that schools, teachers and pupils were monitored and meeting national standards. Formula funding is an example of a policy where its aimed at creating an education market rather than to tackle inequality. This is where a school receives the same amount of money for each pupil. This can affect a working-class child’s education because if other schools have a higher funding because they are more popular and have better exam results that child is unlikely to get a place at that school and then end up at a less-popular school which has lower exam results because of its lack of funding due to its lack of pupils.

Contributing factors toward SWB of the Institutionalized Elderly Essay

Apart from delineating the cognitive and affective indicators of SWB, this study also attempted to identify the possible factors which contribute to SWB. A host of factors were identified in the largely western literature. These are presented in the succeeding pages. Physical Health: Health is one of the most important variables in predicting whether people are happy (Campbell et al. , 1976). The World Health Organization defines health as, the optimal functioning of the human organism to meet biological, psychological, ethical and spiritual needs (Emeth & Greenhut, 1991). In this study the elderly were said to have ‘optimal functioning’ when he or she had basic competence, which was necessary for maintenance of independent living (Martin, 2001). In the case of the elderly in the study it was denoted by their ability for personal care on their own. It also pertained to mental health, which was a state where the elderly were not prone to depression, or other mental illness, and did not have any major cognitive impairments. Autonomy: Autonomy could be equated to having the capacity for selfdetermination, independence, internal locus of control, and internal regulation of behavior (Ryff, 1989). Having a sense of being in control (autonomy) means that one’s thoughts and actions are one’s own and not determined by others. It is related to physical health too as it gives a sense of mastery over situations. It is important for all and particularly for the elderly to maintain that sense of control or autonomy because a sense of losing control of one’s life or one’s power is to in some ways lose one’s worth, which can have detrimental effect on one’s physical as well as psychological health. Money/Income: Income or money is importantly related to a sense of well-being in old age (Diener, 1984) and the elderly in the study may or may not enjoy financial security Money is important probably because of the sense of security that they experience when they have enough money which could implicitly affect their sense of autonomy and self-worth. Family Relationships: Family is a natural institution constant across time and space which is a very close and intimate group and one’s sense of well-being is sustained by membership in this primary group, as it provides a sense of security, connectedness, and belongingness to the aged. There are no substitutes for the close relationship in the experience of well-being in the case of the aged. In the case of the elderly in the study, family relationship is limited to this intimate group consisting of the spouse, children and grandchildren as the extended family is almost nonexistent in the given context. Friendship: Friendship or close relationship with members of the same age group often sharing personal characteristics, life styles, values and experiences is a source of enjoyment, socializing, and reminiscing the past; promote a higher satisfaction among the older adults (Sorensen & Pinquart, 2000). In the given situation it could be long standing friends from the past, and or the friendship developed among the co-residents of the home. Social Support and Social Interest: To experience a sense of well-being persons should have deep feeling of sympathy, and affection for human beings (social interest/altruism). That is, their ability to go beyond the personal to interpersonal establishing deep, profound interpersonal relationships and social support, to transpersonal, which is relating to the Divine in the social context of one’s life. These play a significant role in maintaining their psychological, social, and physical integrity over time (Witmer & Sweeny, 1992) and consequently the sense well-being. Attitude toward Death: Death can be understood as a natural process of transition from one stage of life to another. Depending on the meaning people attach to death, they fear death or embrace it as a natural transition with a sense of acceptance and surrender (Atchley, 1997). Accepting old age and death meaningfully makes life happier. Fear or acceptance of death is closely related to general satisfaction. According to (Moberg, 2001), when life is lived to the full, death becomes a fulfillment, a completion. Religion and Spirituality: Subjective aspects of religion and spirituality include religious identification, religious attitudes, values, beliefs, knowledge, and mystical/religious experiences. Religious experience provides a sense of meaning and purpose in daily life (Polner, 1989). Spirituality usually refers to a unique, personally meaningful experience of a transcendent dimension that is associated with wholeness and wellness (Westgate, 1996). Spiritual wellness is the dimension that permits the integration of one’s spirituality with the other dimensions of life, thus maximizing the potential for growth and self-actualization (Westgate, 1996). At this point of SWB research, there is already an idea of the variables which correlate with SWB. However, a better understanding of parameters that influences the relationships, the directions of influences between variables, and the different influences interact are still needed (Diener, 1984). Given the assumption that these features are deep cross-cultural, universally applicable, core characteristic features of well being sought by the aged, the researcher believed that the institutionalized care for the aged and their subjective sense of well-being is also context specific. An understanding of psychological well-being necessarily rely upon the moral visions that are culturally embedded and frequently culture specific (Christopher, 1999). In this context, one might ask how the institutionalized aged of Gladys Spellman experience the transition from mathru-pithru devobhava (mother and father are like gods) to institutionalized care, what their experience of the subjective well-being consisted in, and what might be the specific factors that would contribute to their sense of well being. It is possible that the western culture-specific factors of subjective well-being outlined above may not have the same relevance for the population under investigation. This study was expected to help understand the contextspecific aspects of well-being of the institutionalized aged.
